Typism Gold Coast Workshops: September 28–29
We have organised two days of hands-on workshops with Typism speakers past and present. All workshops run from 2 pm until 6 pm and will be held at Griffith University on the Gold Coast.
All materials are supplied and the classes kept deliberately small so you get plenty of hands-on tuition from your workshop presenter.
Tickets are ($67 / $47) and you can take one workshop on Thursday and one on Friday.
Experiment with lettering using various tools/styles, and discover how to bring your shapes into the digital world using Béziers in this in-depth workshop.
For beginners and experienced pros alike, this 4-hour workshop is divided up into three parts. The first is a fun, relaxed, lettering session, involving using a variety of drawing tools to produce expressive and experimental lettering pieces. You will be encouraged to play with different styles, loosen up, and get outside your comfort zone.
Next, you will sift through the pieces you’ve created, choose your favourite, and use tracing paper to iterate and improve your shapes. Once you’re happy with the result, you’ll photograph your work, bring it into Photoshop to prep, and trace it in a font editor using Bézier curves. We’ll discuss best practices, tips for improving your curves, point placement, handy keyboard shortcuts, and workflows to increase your efficiency.
The last part is a bonus round, and is optional. Those that want to join in will gather together to chat about what’s involved in creating a typeface from your lettering—whatever style it may be. We’ll discuss connection systems, how to understand, rationalise and break down what’s happening in your original drawing, and even touch upon some basic OpenType features to aid the illusion of organic writing.
You’ll leave the workshop with:
- A new perspective on lettering-based type design
- A series of fun hand-lettered pieces using different tools
- A polished, digitised, lettering piece.
What you will need:
- Glyphs (trial version available from https://glyphsapp.com/buy) or any other font editor
- Your favourite drawing tools (we will supply the basics, including markers, pencils and paper).
Sydney lettering artist Dave Coleman is passionate about letterforms, and the impact they have on our day-to-day lives. He also has a super quirky retro-style, a playful sense of fun and wants to capture this in his work.
