Typism Gold Coast Workshops: September 28–29
We have organised two days of hands-on workshops with Typism speakers past and present. All workshops run from 2 pm until 6 pm and will be held at Griffith University on the Gold Coast.
All materials are supplied and the classes kept deliberately small so you get plenty of hands-on tuition from your workshop presenter.
Tickets are ($67 / $47) and you can take one workshop on Thursday and one on Friday.
Learn the basics of typeface design with this hands-on workshop where you design your own typeface, ready for digitising.
In this informative workshop cunningly disguised as fun, we’ll spend a lazy few hours drawing type on paper. You’ll be tricked into THINKING you’re enjoying yourself when actually you’re being embedded with knowledge and practical techniques. You’ll find out how letters are related by DNA as we extract the whole alphabet from a single origin point.
Pesky type questions like ‘Which letter do I start with?’ and ‘How do I make it legible?’ will be answered. You’ll discover how to construct letters with legibility, rhythm and extra hotness (phwoar), and how to get your spacing looking sexy.
This class focuses on the concept phase of type design, but towards the end, I will demonstrate how the method applies to digitising your letters, and provide a pathway to complete your font on your own.
This workshop is for the everyday designer, not just the type nerds. Even though we’re designing a font, the knowledge gained will improve your typography in general. Students and professionals of any experience level who have an interest in typography. The only skill you need is to be able to draw a bit.
What to bring:
- A font idea (a few letters is enough).
- Tolerance of puns.
- And a hat. Nobody gets in without a hat.
You’ll leave the workshop with:
- Improved type skills
- Some casual reference terminology such as ‘stroke contrast’ to impress your boss and obtain a pay rise.
- A set of cool drawings to build upon.
